Data Communications and Networks April 12, 2019 postadmin Post in Uncategorized CSC00240 Assignment 2 PART 1 S1/2019CSC00240 – Data Communications and NetworksAssignment 2Network Design for a Modern Software development company Due Date: Due Date: Part 1 15% of total unit marks Part 2 25 % of total unit marks 18 April 2019 11:00 PM24 May 2019 11:00 PM Marks: Complete Report (Part 1 and Part 2) 40% of the total unit marksBackground:Advanced Medicos Limited (AML) is a digital health company which sells healthcare products. Their mainproduct is system (hardware) which provides a variety of health services. AML now intends to provide thehealth services through the web in addition to the system they sell so customers don’t necessarily have to buythe system. In view of this, AML needs to upgrade their network. The company needs your expertise toupgrade their existing network. Their current network is old and will need to be replaced. The managingdirector has asked for a “software development company of the future, using the latest technologies with anetwork which can accommodate the load now and for another five years and leaves room for furtherexpansion”.CurrentAML’s headquarter (HQ) is located in two adjacent three-story buildings (Buildings A and B). The distancebetween the buildings is 20m. AML has currently 200 employees. The organization has four departments: Department HostsSoftware Development 70 workstations, 10 printersProduction 5 workstations, 2 printersMarketing 10 workstations, 4 printersAdministration 5 workstations, 2 printers Software Development and Marketing are in Building A with the other two departments are in Building B.The network is a simple switched network with no wireless support. All the workstations, printers and otherdevices are connected through the wired network. There is no support for Bring Your Own Device (BYOD).The server farm in located in Building B. Currently, there is no direct connection between the two buildingsand the two buildings access each other’s networks through a web portal. The edge router (router which isconnected to the internet and provides internet access to the organization) is located in Building A.FutureThe future aspiration is to change the culture of the workplace. The employees and management particularlywant to enable working from home for the software development team. In this regard, it is expected that allsoftware developers (65) will be issued with Laptops/MacBook Pro which they can take home. AML will alsoneed to increase their resources to support the new online services. The production process will also beupdated. The production team will need 60 new computers to control the 3D printers. The administrationdepartment will be adding 8 more workstation and 2 printers to handle the extra workload. AML also wantsto be more open and allow BYOD but it does not want to compromise on security.CSC00240 Assignment 2 PART 1 S1/2019AML also needs to connect with a WAN at a branch office which has just been opened in another city. Thenew branch has only two departments: software development (25 hosts) and marketing (6 hosts). This branchis located approximately 100 km from the HQ of the company. They need to be linked to the existing softwaredevelopment company’s HQ network.Important objectives of the Future Network:The main objectives for the proposed solution are:• A modern network for the company• More accessibility without compromising on security• Support for online services• To ensure that these company has videoconferencing between the main office and their branch. The network is proposed to achieve the above objectives considering the company’s following business andtechnical goals.Business goals:• Improved communications, wireless, videoconferencing, etc.• Spare no expense,• Protect company information,• The company of the future will have over 400 employees,• Be excellent in technology.Technical goals:• The current network, computer rooms are to be upgraded to a modern network (campus design) tomeet developers and employee’s needs,• Scalability – remember they want to expand for next five years,• Availability – Wireless network access is available in all employees as well as some outdoor areasfor software developers and employees,• Employees have access to company resources from both company and home (different servers),• Performance – network performance must be high,• Reliability – no single point of failure,• Security – protection of company information and other IT assets,What you need to doYou are required to design the network you would recommend and how it would be configured. Rememberthe goal of building a new network is that it will support the company’s needs for the next five years. Yourrecommendations are to be submitted as a formal report containing your analysis of the present situation, andyour recommended network solution. Please see next page for Part 1 details including assessment criteriaCSC00240 Assignment 2 PART 1 S1/2019Part 1Due Date: 18 April 2019 11:00 PMMarks: 15% of the total unit marksFor part 1 report, you are required to:• Analyse user network requirements• Describe and analyse the current networkYou will need to make a number of assumptions (see below) regarding the existing organisationalstructure including management hierarchy, software, hardware, media, user communities andnetwork use patterns , etc. which will need to be documented in the appropriate sections of your report.Employees form communities of users based on their roles.Hint Work out the needs for each of these communities of users. You will need to identify all the media (cabling) and network hardware of the existing network(s) and explaintheir function, performance, capacity, etc. You will need to include both logical and physical networkdiagrams for the current network. You will also need to provide a layout of your software developmentcompany showing where your network devices are located. Presentation is important. No marks areallocated to referencing, however, you are strongly encouraged to do so if relevant.AssumptionsThe list below may not exist for current design but will exist in proposed network. You are also free to makeyour own assumptions as you wish to assist you.1. Microsoft Office suite (Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel Files),2. Internet Browser3. Email4.
